Judd Winick is still not a misogynist

When I saw Brave New World I couldn't help but notice Winick's treatment of Mary Marvel parallel what he did to Doctor Light II - take her powers away and then drop her from a great height. Thanks to Scans Daily I now find that the parallel continues, and the only female member of the Marvel family is going to spend at least the first two issues of the new series in a coma, with severe physical damage.

Of course it's entirely possible that he hits his male characters with extreme physical trauma and leaves them for dead on a regular basis. It's not like I read enough of his work to make a comparison. It may be pure coincidence that whenever I pick up one of his comics it happens to feature a female character being severely traumatised and removed from the action, leaving only male characters to continue the story.

Let's just say if the next time I see only the female character(s) in a story put out of action (even if they aren't depowered and/or dropped from a great height) and it turns out Winick had anything to do with it, I'll begin to suspect he has some unresolved issues.

Compare and contrast: Green Arrow, shot twice in the chest (once through the heart, if Winick is to be believed), spends three pages out of action, taking him into and out of the coma, wakes up from the coma fighting fit, and able to take down a handful of big guys and run through tropical forest, within a month of said impalement.
Mia's broken leg is treated as far more of an impediment than Ollie being SHOT THROUGH THE HEART

It's sad that they screwed mary over so badly. Not only that, but why is freddie taking over the mantle? Wasn't Mary next in line to become captain marvel?

Wait a minute...I just saw Mary in "52" and she sure looked fine there. What the heck?

Yes, but then so did Doctor Light. They had to tie continuity in knots to place a story that clearly happened at the beginning of Infinite Crisis during week two of 52 because of Judd's failure to keep up with the overall DCU gameplan.

Not that he is the only one. The Shadowpact have now shown up in 52, which means that the year they spent away in their own comic must be the year after 52.

Isn't it anyone's job to keep track of this stuff?

Brave New World takes place AFTER 52. Remember? 52 is the year we skipped over.

Still, we need to speak to Winick personally...I'm not sure how...

But didn't the Marvels lose their powers during Infinite Crisis? That whole exploding of the Rock of Eternity in Day of Vengeance? Or was that something different?

Both Mary and Junior were active during Infinite Crisis, although only in the background of a few scenes.

Each Brave New World segment seems to take place at a different time. The Marvels losing their powers is definitely during IC.

I think the exploding Rock was just telling us that's when the "problems" started.

Not to defend Winnick (I loathe what he did to Kimiyo and Mary), but there is a strong female character he writes that he hasn't crippled, depowered or sexually abused.

Katana in Outsiders.

And I'm beginning to suspect that Judd -- whom I know personally -- is not the one with the unresolved issues.

Wow, Scippy, you know Judd personally? I'm assuming you don't mean in the fanboy usage I've seen some places where it means you shook hands with him twice at a con.

Can you do me a favor next time you see him and find out what happened to Kimiyo? He wouldn't tell me when I asked him and it's been a year now since he left her lying in a pool of blood.

No, it was like this: The Rock exploded, Billy almost lost his powers, Mary and Freddy became weaker when not close to each other, Billy entered the rock, Mary and Freddy ended up on Earth-S, then the 52 wedding, and THEN Trails of Shazam.

Re: Judd's treatment of Mary Marvel
I'm a big Captain Marvel fan. And even though I felt the first issue was kind of weak, I was going to stick with the series and see where it went. But after seeing the pages of Mary broken and in a coma? That series is dead to me. I will not buy it & I will not read it.

Re: Shadowpact in 52.
It's allready been stated that their appearence at the memorial was a gaffe. But they haven't directly answered any questions about their appearence recently. Me? I'm convinced that the shadowpact aren't actually -there- and it's all in Dibney's head.
